Nutrition and Physical Activity During Iowa Fall  Weather

Use the following tips to help you stay healthy during the colder Iowa weather


Nutrition

Follow these tips to help you stay nutritious during fall

1. Stay fresh -Look for fresh fruits and vegetables that are available in season: such as squash, apples and        celery
2. Know alternatives- Spaghetti squash is a great alternative for pasta Click Here for recipes
3. Give in to cravings- During fall we crave warm meals and soups- look for Healthy Options
4. Eat slowly- Eat a few bites and then drink at least 1/2 cup of water before continuing your meal
5. Watch snacking- Be mindful of snacking and take portions with you, away from the table/bowl

Physical Activity

Follow these tips to help you stay safe during colder weather

1. Look for alternative options to outdoor activity- indoor fitness classes and fitness dvd's are a great idea
2. Use the cold weather to your advantage- skiing and tubing are great options
3. Dress in layers- 1st layer-  a synthetic fiber that will whisk away sweat
                               2nd layer- select wool or cotton to absorb sweat
                               3rd layer-  use something lightweight to keep out the cold and snow/rain
4. Protect your head, hands and feet. Make sure to wear warm hats,gloves and warm socks
5. Drink up- you can still become dehydrated in the cold, bring water and drink more if your lips are chapped
6. Don't overdo it- Cold is an added stress on the body, listen to your body and know you may need to limit       your runs/walks due to the cold.
