Housing Collaboration

The Story County Hunger Collaboration evolved out of shared interests in trying to resolve hunger and food insecurity issues in Story County. The group includes representatives from a number of organizations and groups involved with the Story County Quality of Life Alliance. The group meets independently to determine ways that they might more effectively combine their efforts to have a bigger impact and to create a sustainable structure over time.

The stated mission of the Hunger Collaboration is as follows:

The Hunger Collaboration will work to assess the need and identify barriers to increase food security for those who are hunger in Story County

The collaborating or supported organizations involved with the Hunger Collaboration are listed below:
Ames Housing Board; Farmer’s Market; AMOS, Bethesda Food Pantry, First Evangelical Free Church (FP), Food at First, Food Bank of Iowa, Good Neighbor, Heartland Senior Services, ISU Extension & Outreach, Ames Schools, Lord of Life Church, MGMC, MICA, Mustard Seed Community Farm, Nevada Community Cupboard, Nevada Schools, New Life Church, Prairie Rivers, Salvation Army, St. Cecilia, UWSC Volunteer Center

The current SCQOL goals targeted by the Hunger Collaboration are listed below:

  • Programs that help children (e.g. BackPack Program (elementary schools) and  Summer Food Programs – Nevada and Ames)
  • Supplemental Food for Seniors – getting food to senior citizens through a monthly distribution 
  • Nutrition Education & Education on the needs – helping programs better educate their participants on how to shop and cook on a limited budget; meal planning AND finding a way to connect growers on what is needed and the best way to distribute; educating community on what food pantries need
  • Documenting on a map access to food throughout Story County – includes food pantries; congregate meal sites; home delivered meal contact; and other food sources
  • Advocacy and Collaboration – working to educate legislature on the needs of the poor; sharing the story on the hunger in Story County and Iowa;

Schedule of Meetings

The Housing Collaboration meets every quarter on the third wednesday of the month at 3:00 pm (March, July, Sept, November). If you would like to learn more about the Transportation Collaboration or contact the leaders please complete the contact form below.
