Story County - Community Health Needs Assessment

Every 5 years, counties across the state conduct a formalized Community Health Needs Assessment and create an associated Health Improvement Plan. The assessments have been coordinated by the Story County Community Coalition - the leadership team overseeing the Story County Quality of Life Alliance.

The team examined a variety of resources including the County Health Rankings conducted by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, the Iowa Youth Survey, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the National College Health Assessment. The review revealed key gaps in knowledge and areas needing additional assessment. This prompted the need to conduct a supplemental needs assessment to obtain more specific information about community health needs. Funding for the assessment was obtained from a number of key community stakeholders and non-profit human services agencies in the county, including the United Way of Story County, Mary Greeley Medical Center, Homeward, Youth and Shelter Services, Mid-Iowa Community Action, Lutheran Services in Iowa, Story County Community Services, Story County Decategorization, Story County Empowerment.

The assessment was comprised of several components, including a general population survey and focus groups targeting specific population groups. The survey was framed as a Health and Human Services Assessment since it included items related to health and human service needs for the county. The data were collected and analyzed by a research team from Iowa State University. The project was coordinated by the ISU Extension to Communities with assistance from the Institute for Design Research and Outreach (IDRO) and the Center for Survey Statistics and Methodology (CSSM) and the Nutrition and Wellness Research Center

The data obtained from the report provide a valuable resource for understanding our local needs while also serving as a benchmark to track progress over time.
